About Us
About Us!
The Silos Accommodation is owned and operated by us, Nick and Amber Heffernan. Nick was born and raised here on “Kameruka,” his family’s mixed farming property, and is the fifth generation to farm this land. Our children represent the sixth. Today, our enterprise focuses mainly on lamb production alongside cereal and canola cropping.
We met in the mid1990s and have lived on “Kameruka” since our marriage in 1998. Here, we raised our four children, now adults, and have since welcomed grandchildren. We hope they too will experience the privilege of living and working on the land, learning to care for it and value its importance. This project has been made possible with the assistance of all our children, from deconstruction work by our eldest son Casey, to online platform and media support by our youngest son Thomas, the creation of our logo by our youngest daughter Jaimee, through to ongoing support from our eldest daughter Hope. Along with the support of our extended family and friends. A mention of special thanks to Michael and Sandra, the older generation, for their belief in us and unwavering continued support.
Nick has farmed this land his entire life. It is in his blood and his true passion. He has always sought better ways to care for the land he is now custodian of, and the creation of The Silos Accommodation has become an integral part of this journey.
Amber is a Registered Nurse who worked for many years as a perioperative nurse, fulfilling a lifelong dream. In early 2022, she paused her hospital based career to care for her elderly parents, which created a window for a new dream to emerge, the building of The Silos Accommodation.
The Dream
For more than 20 years we imagined creating a place that would allow others to share in the beauty of our land. The idea began with Nick’s vision while shovelling out the flat bottom 100 tonne Lysaght grain silos, which had sat on top of the hills in the paddock “Flowerdale” since the 1960s. Looking out through the open silo doors across the patchwork farmland of the Eurongilly Valley, he began to wonder what could be.
From that point, we set out to transform the silos into a unique farmstay experience where guests could immerse themselves in this beautiful part of the world. We knew from the beginning that to stand out we needed to create something truly special—luxury accommodation that combined comfort, sustainability, and authenticity.
A key motivation for establishing the business was to secure the farm for future generations. Diversifying our income helps protect both the environmental and financial sustainability of our property. By establishing The Silos Accommodation, we are able to preserve the land in a way that is not only profitable, but also protected and regenerative.
We see ourselves as caretakers for those who come after us, just as generations before entrusted the land to us. It is important to us that others understand the way we work with nature in our farming practices. Opening the farm gates to guests allows them to experience first hand the environment we are privileged to live in and to appreciate the importance of sustainable farming.
The Build
Our vision was clear: to create a space of luxury, comfort, and relaxation, with attention to detail that feels effortless, yet powered by the sun and designed with a minimal footprint. Luxury that is off-grid, sustainable, and beautiful.
The Grain Loft was born from years of planning and research. Some aspects of the design proved challenging, so we enlisted the expertise of an architect, builder, solar specialists, and a skilled trades team. We were fortunate to be surrounded by people who thought outside the box and shared our passion for bringing this vision to life.
The process had its challenges—sourcing the right materials, repurposing and reusing wherever possible, and ensuring every choice reflected our commitment to sustainability. Examples include using low VOC paints and finishes, silica-free stone, reclaimed timbers, and repurposing the original silo slab as outdoor paving. Even the silo doors were reused to frame the main driveway entrance.
The Grain Loft achieved a 7 star EER rating. The 46.5m² building includes a carport with EV charger and battery storage, and a BAL rating of 12.5. It runs entirely on solar power with battery storage, uses no gas, and processes waste through a worm farm septic system. Guest waste is carefully separated for recycling or composting wherever possible.
Ongoing Commitment
We believe it is our responsibility to offset the carbon footprint of both the build and ongoing operation. For every booking, we plant a tree, adding to the 2,000–3,000 trees and shrubs we already plant annually. Guests can see some of these plantings from the silo or along the farm trail, where they can also book a “Meet the Farmer” tour to experience life on the farm behind the scenes.
Guests enjoy an all-inclusive experience with a focus on supporting local businesses from across the Riverina region. From curated food and wine to authentic farm experiences, our aim is for guests to truly disconnect from the outside world and immerse themselves in luxury, peace, and nature.
Our goal is simply to provide an experience that is indulgent, memorable, and inspiring, one that leaves guests wanting to return again and again.
The Process
It all began with a farmer and a nurse with a dream.
A dream to create a place where memories and moments are made to last a lifetime.
A place where others could experience and learn about farming in a sustainable and environmentally conscious way.
To do this The Silos Accommodation was created.
An exclusive tranquil and secluded off grid luxury escape for 2.
Where rustic charm meets modern elegance.
